Two independent strong predictors of elevated lipoprotein(a) are both present. Together they predict markedly elevated Lp(a) and a substantially increased lifetime risk of coronary artery disease and aortic valve calcification. A clinical Lp(a) blood test is strongly advised — the actual circulating value matters.
Together these strongly predict very high levels of a heart-disease- linked blood particle called Lp(a). That means a meaningfully raised lifetime risk of heart artery disease and stiffening of the aortic valve. It's worth asking your GP for an actual Lp(a) blood test — the real number in your blood matters most.
What this means
Lipoprotein(a) is one of the most under-recognised inherited cardiovascular risk factors. Combining the two most-replicated LPA SNPs identifies individuals likely to have very high Lp(a) — often more than doubled compared to the population average. Lp(a) doesn't respond to statins or lifestyle changes, but several Lp(a)-lowering drugs are in late-stage trials, and aggressive control of other modifiable risk factors is meaningful.
Lp(a) is a particle in your blood — set almost entirely by your DNA — that pushes heart disease risk up but rarely gets measured. The two spots flagged here are the strongest known predictors of high Lp(a), and having a change at both usually means your blood level is more than double the population average. Lp(a) itself doesn't drop with statins or diet, though new drugs targeting it are in late-stage trials. In the meantime, keeping the other risk factors (blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, smoking) under tight control is a meaningful counterweight.
Caveats
- Most strongly validated in European-descent populations.
- A direct Lp(a) blood test is more informative than the genetic surrogate.
